The Kasena Nankana West District Assembly has handed over a total of 900 pieces of furniture—including dual desks, hexagonal tables, mono desks—and a three‑unit classroom block at Bonia to the Ghana Education Service (GES), even as officials admit that thousands of pupils in the district still lack proper furniture.
The facilities, funded through the District Assembly Common Fund, were presented by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Stephen Aeke Akurugu, and the Member of Parliament, Hon. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, at a ceremony attended by GES officials, Assembly staff, and NDC party executives.
The Scale of the Gap
The GES District Director, Madam Mary Magdalene, provided figures showing how wide the deficit remains. Kindergarten enrollment stands at 4,001, but only 681 pieces of furniture are available.
At the primary level, 12,849 pupils are enrolled, with 3,948 pieces of furniture available—leaving the district in need of 2,681 more. At the JHS level, with 5,521 pupils, only 1,518 pieces of furniture are available, and 458 more are needed.
Madam Magdalene appealed to the Assembly for additional support to help bring the situation under control.
“Basic education needs a lot of attention,” Hon. Alamzy stated.
The MP urged the Director to mobilize her staff to improve basic education, emphasizing that the sector requires significant attention and support so that children in the area can access quality education and “better beginnings.”
Kindergartens to Be Prioritised
The DCE assured the gathering that the 10% component of the Common Fund allocated for furniture is being used effectively.
He added that kindergarten facilities would be prioritised to ensure young children have a conducive environment for learning.
