Vice-President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Oluwatosin Anthony Ogunjimi, has concluded a two-day working visit to The Gambia focused on regional peace, security and development.
The visit, which ended on Tuesday, September 29, was his first working mission to the country since assuming his role.
In a news release shared on Thursday, October 1, the regional bloc reported that during the visit, Mr Ogunjimi engaged with key ECOWAS institutions and Gambian authorities and also inspected development projects supported by the regional bloc.
He visited the ECOWAS Permanent Mission Delegation in The Gambia and the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) as part of efforts to strengthen the organisation's institutional presence in the country.
The ECOWAS Vice-President also inspected projects supported by the ECOWAS Regional Stabilisation and Development Fund (RSDF), including the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) and the Fish Smoking Complex, with support from GAMWORKS.
He subsequently held a courtesy meeting with Gambian Vice-President Mohammed BS Jallow, where they discussed shared priorities in development, peace and regional security.
As part of the mission's focus on regional peace and security, Mr Ogunjimi visited troops from the Nigerian Army's 11th contingent deployed in The Gambia under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
He also visited the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response Centre in The Gambia before bringing the two-day mission to an end.
ECOWAS said the visit demonstrated its commitment to strengthening its presence on the ground and advancing peace, security, resilience and regional development across West Africa.
