Work on the Kejetia Phase 2 project is expected to resume in October 2026 following engagements between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the contractor, with completion projected for 2027.
KMA Engineer, George Kwame Nyame, said the project remains a priority for both the government and the Assembly, which is working to address the challenges that led to the suspension of construction.
Speaking to OTEC News reporter Anthoniette Ama Nyame, Mr Nyame explained that the contractor halted work due to a number of challenges but said discussions with the Assembly had paved the way for construction to restart.
He said the project could be completed by the middle of 2027 or, at the latest, by the end of the year.
According to him, the relocation of traders was one of the major challenges encountered at the initial stage of the project.
He explained that it took almost a year for traders occupying the project area to relocate before construction activities could commence.
Funding constraints also affected the progress of the project and contributed to the eventual pause in construction, he added.
Mr Nyame said the Assembly's plans extend beyond Phase 2, with the KMA expected to commence work on the Kejetia Phase 3 project after the completion of the current phase.
On the allocation of stores under Phase 2, he said prospective occupants would be required to make full payment before taking possession.
He explained that the arrangement would differ from the approach adopted under Phase 1, where some occupants were allowed to take possession of stores before completing payment.
According to Mr Nyame, some Phase 1 occupants have still not fully settled their payments nearly five years after taking possession of their stores.
He therefore advised prospective buyers of Phase 2 stores to be prepared to pay the full market value.
The KMA Engineer further indicated that revenue generated from the Phase 2 stores would be used to support the development of the proposed Phase 3 project.
