2,000 New Soldiers: Joy at the Parade Ground, Rumours in the Background

Across Ghana's barracks, parents, guardians and traditional leaders watched their sons and daughters take the Armed Forces oath last week. More than 2,000 recruits of the Navy, Army and Air Force passed out concurrently after six months of training, in what the Herald describes as a nationwide exercise.

The parades. At the Army Recruit Training School in Shai Hills, 646 recruits completed the Basic Infantry Training Course. The Reviewing Officer, Brigadier General Edward Awaribey, told them the pass-out parade is only the beginning of their military careers.

At Takoradi, the Air Force passed out 293 recruits after 26 weeks of training, and top recruits were honoured as Best in Drill, Best in Tactics and Best in Weapons Training.

In Sunyani, the Armour Training School passed out 290 recruits after training that covered physical fitness, weapons, first aid, map reading and drill. At Nutekpor in the Volta Region, the Navy passed out 346 recruits, 254 men and 92 women.

Another 394 recruits passed out from the Army Special Operations Training School. The Navy's reviewing officer thanked parents and families for their sacrifices and asked them to keep supporting the recruits.

The warnings. The new soldiers were cautioned against misusing their uniforms and social media, and were urged to uphold the Armed Forces' reputation and obey the laws of Ghana.

The shadow. For some families, the road to this day has been marked by loss. On 12 November 2025, a crowd surge at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra killed six applicants and injured 34, during a recruitment exercise that was then suspended in Greater Accra pending a Board of Inquiry.

The rumours. Public talk about military recruitment in Ghana has long carried a suspicion that a place has to be "bought." Earlier exercises were marred by allegations of corruption, fake enlistment letters and political bias, according to GBC.

An audit disclosed by the Defence Minister found 34 trainees of an earlier course had breached enlistment rules, and 2,872 potential recruits were waiting for training. For the current exercise, the Armed Forces has warned that it uses no middlemen and charges nothing beyond the official application cost.

What comes next. Another 2,000 recruits are expected in October, part of a plan to recruit 12,000 over three and a half years across all regions. For the families who celebrated this week, the parade is proof that the door can open. For those still waiting, the question is whether the next intake will be earned on merit alone.
