Fate of Abductees: Nigeria's National Assembly Puts Captives Back on the Agenda

Nigeria's National Assembly has charged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue citizens held by armed groups, as lawmakers returned from a 68-day annual recess with growing alarm over rural insecurity, according to Daily Trust's front-page report on Wednesday.

The call came when the Senate and House of Representatives resumed plenary on Tuesday. Both chambers then adjourned until 13 October, citing ongoing rehabilitation work in their chambers, and so are heading into another break almost immediately.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio set the tone in a legislative-agenda speech titled "Keeping Faith with Nigeria." He referred to recent abductions during Friday prayers in Niger State and elsewhere, and said parliament cannot consider itself free while citizens remain in captivity.

He argued that as long as a single Nigerian is held captive, part of the nation is captive too, and urged security agencies to pursue rescues and protect vulnerable communities with renewed vigour, Daily Trust reported.

The appeal lands amid a worsening wave of kidnappings. Al Jazeera reported this week that more than 80 people, mostly farmers and women, were abducted in the Mariga area of Niger State and in Yargada, Zamfara State. Police also found human remains, including 28 skulls, at suspected gang camps.

It noted that mass abductions for ransom have become common in north-western and north-central Nigeria.

In August, gunmen seized as many as 600 worshippers during Friday prayers in Dekera village, Niger State. Residents protested last Monday that hundreds remained in captivity a month later. Al Jazeera adds that security is set to be a major issue in the January presidential elections, and that President Tinubu faces growing criticism over lax security.

There was some positive news on Daily Trust's front page, which carries a separate report that security operatives rescued 41 abducted travellers in Zamfara.

For families of the abducted, the test is whether Tuesday's rhetoric translates into rescues before lawmakers reconvene.
