Ghana facilitates return of 180 nationals from Libya

The government of Ghana, in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has facilitated the safe return of 180 Ghanaian nationals from Libya.

The returnees, made up of 153 males and 27 females, including children and infants, arrived in Ghana on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

Their return forms part of ongoing collaboration among the Ghanaian government, IOM and ECOWAS to assist Ghanaian nationals in vulnerable situations abroad through voluntary return and reintegration programmes.

The returnees were met on arrival by the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana, Mohammed Lawan Gana, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The initiative is also aimed at promoting safe, orderly and regular migration while ensuring that Ghanaian nationals requiring assistance abroad can return home safely and receive support to rebuild their lives.

Support for reintegration
The returnees are expected to receive assistance as they begin the process of reintegrating into their families and communities.

Authorities and partner organisations will continue working together to support their transition and welfare following their return.

Mr Gana welcomed the returnees and commended the institutions and partners involved in facilitating their safe repatriation.

He encouraged them to remain optimistic about the future and regard their return as an opportunity to start afresh rather than as a setback.

He further urged them to take advantage of available support programmes, particularly those focused on skills development, entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities, to help them regain economic independence and reintegrate successfully into their communities.
