‘No human civilisation deserves to be annihilated’ – Mahama jabs Trump

President John Dramani Mahama has rejected the idea of destroying an entire civilisation, telling world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly that dialogue remains the best path to resolving even the most difficult international disputes.

Although he did not mention US President Donald Trump by name, President Mahama’s remarks came 2 days after Mr Trump used the word “annihilate” in warning Iran during his own address to the UN General Assembly.

Mr Trump had warned that the United States could “annihilate the Islamic Republic” if diplomatic efforts failed to resolve tensions with Tehran.

Addressing the Assembly, President Mahama responded by stressing the importance of diplomacy, national sovereignty and the protection of civilians.

“No human civilisation deserves to be annihilated, certainly not a member state of the United Nations. I believe that dialogue can resolve even the most intractable of problems,” he said.

He called for respect for the sovereignty of nations, the protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access in situations of conflict.

President Mahama also used his address to press for broader reforms within the international system.

His proposals included permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, reform of the global financial architecture, reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade and stronger climate financing for developing countries.

He also called for greater African participation in the processing of critical minerals to ensure that the continent derives more value from its natural resources.
