Promoted Teachers Betrayed: Another Failed Promise By Mahama Government

I have followed with keen interest the conversations on social media regarding government's promise, through the Ministry of Education, to place promoted teachers on their rightful salary scales and pay all arrears.

After deliberations with teacher unions, the Ministry issued a communique assuring teachers that payment would be done by the end of September.

Yesterday, when the validation window was opened, that promise was not honoured.

The result is anger and deep disappointment among promoted teachers. The issue is now dominating discussions on all teacher platforms.

Sadly, this is not an isolated case. This government has developed a pattern of promising teachers and failing to deliver, even as teachers struggle under the high cost of living.

Personally, I am not surprised. I told a friend this promise would not be fulfilled because I worked under President Mahama before. In Mahama 1, he introduced the killer three-month pay policy, where teachers worked for over a year and were paid for only three months.

On matters of teacher welfare, President Mahama's record speaks for itself. He cannot be trusted.

From the failure to automatically post teachers to the failure to recruit them as promised, the list of disappointments keeps growing.

In contrast, former President Nana Akufo-Addo deserves commendation. He posted teachers, ensured salaries came on time, and introduced two additional allowances to support teachers.

For President Mahama, the less said, the better. Teachers have now realized they exchanged colour TV for black and white.

Even the threat by teacher unions to strike by close of day tomorrow shows how bad the situation has become.

In conclusion, this is a signal for teachers to brace themselves for more failures since nothing is promised under President Mahama as president.
