Remember Nkrumah by defending nationalism, protecting SOEs — CPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the government to protect and revive State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), arguing that properly managed state companies can help create jobs and generate revenue for the country.

The party made the call on Monday, September 21, 2026, as Ghana commemorated the 117th anniversary of the birth of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and a key figure in the country’s independence struggle.

In a statement signed by Osei Kofi Acquah, National Communications Director of the CPP, Nkrumah’s political philosophy was rooted in nationalism and volunteerism, principles it said should continue to guide efforts to protect Ghana’s national assets.

The party expressed concern over what it described as the deterioration of several SOEs and factories, as well as the continued sale of some state assets to politically exposed persons and individuals it referred to as cronies since Nkrumah’s overthrow.

The CPP also criticised what it described as an agenda to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), saying it strongly opposed such a move.

“It is illogical to believe that a company, factory, or state-owned enterprise cannot be properly managed by over 30 million Ghanaians, yet can be efficiently run by a single individual or a small group,” the party said.

The CPP therefore urged the government to restore, revamp and maintain state-owned companies and enterprises while ensuring that they are properly managed.

It said such institutions could contribute to addressing unemployment among Ghana’s youth while also providing an avenue for the state to generate revenue.

The party said remembering Nkrumah should go beyond commemorating his birthday and should include defending the principles and national assets associated with his political legacy.

“Long live the legacies of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Long live Pan-Africanism. Long live Nationalism and Patriotism. Long live Mother Ghana,” the CPP said.
