Former National Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sophia Horner-Sam, has died.
Her death was announced on Monday by the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who paid tribute to the former diplomat and politician in a Facebook post.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of H.E. Sophia Horner-Sam, former National Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party, Deputy Western Regional Minister, Deputy Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways, and Ghana's Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” part of the post read.
The Takoradi MP described Horner-Sam as a distinguished stateswoman and diplomat whose contribution to the NPP, the Western Region and Ghana’s public service spanned several years.
“We thank her for her outstanding service to the New Patriotic Party, the Western Region and our dear Nation. Her wisdom, counsel, and unwavering commitment guided the NPP through many challenging times and left an indelible mark on Ghana's public service,” he stated.
Darko-Mensah also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the NPP.
“On behalf of the people of Takoradi, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, the NPP and all who mourn this great loss.
“May the Almighty grant her soul eternal rest and peace, and may He comfort all who are grieving. Rest in perfect peace, H.E. Sophia Horner-Sam,” he said.
The family of the late diplomat has not yet released an official statement confirming details surrounding her death.
Horner-Sam served in the John Agyekum Kufuor administration, first as Deputy Western Regional Minister before becoming Deputy Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways.
In 2006, she was appointed Ghana’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, a position she held until 2009. She subsequently served on the NPP’s National Council of Elders.
Her death marks the loss of a former senior party official and diplomat who held several public positions during her career.
