Ghana’s independence must translate into economic empowerment -- CPP's Nana Frimpomaa

The 2024 presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, has called for a shift in focus from the debate over Ghana’s founder to the economic independence and welfare of citizens.

Her comment was in relation to the controversy over whether the credit for the country's independence should be given to only the first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or extended to others who played key roles.

Reacting to this, the former presidential candidate said the commemoration of Founder’s Day should go beyond disputes over historical recognition and address the challenges confronting young people, including access to education, accommodation and employment.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on Monday, September 21, she said the country’s history must be taught in a way that helps the younger generation understand the purpose of Ghana’s independence.

Nana Frimpomaa said the continued debate over who founded Ghana and how history is presented could distract from the broader objectives of independence.

According to her, the CPP’s approach would place the welfare of the people at the centre of governance, in line with the vision of Ghana’s independence.

She said the country’s political independence was intended to serve as a foundation for economic independence and greater national self-reliance.

“The political independence was clearly to take us to economic independence,” she stated.

Nana Frimpomaa further argued that the commemoration of September 21 should also prompt discussions about whether Ghana was making progress in improving the lives of its citizens.
