The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Western North Region has intensified efforts to improve public education on its programmes by training District Managers and Public Relations Officers (PROs) from all eight district offices.
The Regional Management team organised the refresher training to strengthen the capacity of frontline managers and communication officers, and provide accurate and consistent information on the operations and new initiatives of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Welcoming participants, the Acting Regional Director of the NHIA, Frank Duku, said the training was timely, particularly as the Authority rolls out initiatives that require sustained public education, including the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC) and the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme.
He said District Managers and PROs had a key responsibility to ensure members and the wider public understood the new initiatives and took full advantage of the services available to them.
According to him, managers and PROs serve as important ambassadors and the voice of the NHIS at the district and community levels, making their role in public communication vital to the success of the Authority’s programmes.
He urged participants to make greater use of radio discussions, public forums, community engagements and other available platforms to explain NHIS policies and programmes in simple, accessible ways.
Mr Duku also encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained from the training to improve their day-to-day work and contribute to strengthening the image and operations of the Authority in the region.
The Regional Operations Manager, Dr Isaac Damptey, focused on the operational side of the Authority, stressing the need for closer coordination between the Operations and Public Relations units.
He said communication activities should be closely aligned with the operational objectives of the NHIS, noting that accurate and timely information could improve public understanding of the Scheme and ultimately support better service delivery.
