Tuanikopey Island: Tema Police intercept 2,213 slabs of suspected Indian hemp on wooden canoe on River Volta

The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on a wooden canoe on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.

The interception was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada at about 12:45am on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a routine patrol.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, the Command said the occupants of the canoe “abandoned the canoe and fled” after sighting the patrol team.

A search of the canoe revealed 29 sacks containing 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.

Police also found 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors, one 40HP and the other 30HP.

“The suspected narcotic substances have been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters,” the statement said, adding that arrangements were underway to convey the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation.

The Police said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those who abandoned the canoe and its contents.

The Command also cautioned the public against “engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances” and urged anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest police station.

It said such information would assist with the ongoing investigation.
