Open Letter To President Mahama: End The Selective Arrest Of Innocent Citizens In The Country

Dear Mr. President,
I write with a deep sense of urgency over the ongoing arrest and abduction of innocent citizens, particularly in connection with the search for Ghana Jollof.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, you are constitutionally bound to protect the fundamental human rights of all citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.

Since you assumed office, I have lost count of the number of innocent Ghanaians who have been arrested, harassed, and intimidated.

In opposition, you campaigned vigorously on a much-touted reset agenda, yet what is unfolding today is the exact opposite.

As a concerned citizen, I am deeply disgusted and scandalized by the rampant arrest of innocent people.

If you described what happened in the past as cruel and hostile, how would you describe what is happening under your own tenure?

We are a nation governed by the rule of law, and these developments are inhumane, cruel, and an affront to the rights of the very people who gave you the mandate to lead.

It appears you have soon forgotten the power of the electorate.

If innocent citizens have now become targets of security operatives, what should we expect going forward?

Unfortunately, it thus appears you are superintending over a regime that is selective and biased in arresting people in this country.

To remind you, we were all in this country when Kevin Taylor lambasted and denigrated all manner of respected people simply because he was advancing your campaign to become President.

Quite recently, Kevin Taylor came to Ghana and was given the needed security protection, despite the manner in which he disrespected revered chiefs, imams, pastors, and other citizens.

Given the above, it defies logic and reason for National Security and other security operatives to arrest and detain innocent people, particularly women.

For the avoidance of doubt, I do not believe in politics of character assassination and plain insults because it has the tendency to erode the gains we have made as a growing democracy.

However, I detest the selective application of our laws to favour only members of the ruling party to the neglect of other citizens.

We are all equal before the law, and it is incumbent on you, as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to protect all Ghanaians.

In conclusion, Mr. President, the time has come for you to reflect on the ongoing needless and barbaric arrest of innocent citizens simply because they are accused of wrongdoing that has not been established.
