President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed plans by the government to regulate the establishment of electric vehicle charging stations to safeguard the stability of electricity supply.
He said the growing number of charging facilities could create pressure on the national power system if they were concentrated in areas without adequate supporting infrastructure.
Addressing the commissioning of the Zonda Tec Ghana Limited Assembly Plant in Tema, President Mahama said the Ministry of Energy and Green Transitions was preparing an electric vehicle policy to guide the establishment and operation of charging stations.
“A few people have started establishing charging stations. If this is not regulated, it could lead to imbalances in our energy system.”
The President explained that the siting of charging stations must be informed by the capacity of nearby transformers and substations to ensure that electricity demand is properly managed.
“Because if we put too many charging stations in one place without taking note of the transformer and the substation that feed those charging stations, it can imbalance the electricity supply in that area.”
He said the proposed EV Policy would be submitted to Cabinet for consideration before specific regulations are introduced to guide businesses seeking to invest in charging infrastructure.
President Mahama also indicated that the government would encourage the use of solar-powered charging stations as part of efforts to advance electric mobility in Ghana.
