Sosu calls for probe into $260m cocaine shipment from Ghana seized in France

Madina MP and member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Dr. Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, has called for a thorough investigation into the seizure of a cocaine consignment valued at about $260 million by French authorities.

French customs officers seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the northern port of Dunkirk on Thursday, September 10, after it arrived in a container of plastic waste from Ghana.

The cocaine was reportedly concealed in the container, with part of the shipment initially destined for Antwerp, Belgium.

The drugs have since been destroyed, while French prosecutors have opened an investigation into the shipment and the criminal network allegedly behind it.

In a social media post on Sunday, September 13, Sosu said the incident could have implications for Ghana’s international reputation and called for anyone found culpable to face the law.

“I believe the reported seizure by French authorities of a cocaine consignment valued at approximately $260 million must be thoroughly investigated, and any persons found culpable must be brought to book,” he wrote.

The lawmaker praised President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for what he described as their efforts to position Ghana as a respected country in global diplomacy and a leader in democracy in Africa.

He, however, cautioned that Ghana’s reputation could be undermined by individuals who may seek to profit illegally at the expense of the State.

“Ghana’s international reputation is a national asset. It must be protected through transparency, accountability and the uncompromising enforcement of the law,” the Madina MP said.
