‎A Colossus Departs: Remembering Alhaji Bamanga Mahmud Tukur (1935–2026) ‎

Nigeria has lost one of its most enduring elder statesmen. Alhaji Dr. Bamanga Mahmud Tukur, CON the Tafidan Adamawa, former Governor of the old Gongola State, former Minister of Industries, former Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party died at his residence in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90. His death came just three days before what would have been his 91st birthday.

A Life That Spanned Nigeria's Modern History

Born on September 15, 1935, in present-day Adamawa State, Bamanga Tukur's public life stretched across more than six decades and touched nearly every era of modern Nigeria from the colonial twilight, through the Second and Third Republics, to the Fourth Republic he lived to see mature into its own long chapter of democratic governance.

He built an early career in public administration before rising to national prominence as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, a role in which he is widely credited with helping to modernize Nigeria's port operations and strengthen the country's maritime sector at a formative period in its economic development.

His political breakthrough came during the Second Republic, when he was elected Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983 a vast northeastern territory later split into today's Adamawa and Taraba states.

That means his political legacy remains woven into the modern history of both states. He went on to serve as Nigeria's Minister of Industries, and in March 2012 was elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, steering the party through one of the more consequential periods in its history as Nigeria's then-ruling party.

A Pan-African Business Statesman
Beyond government office, Tukur was among Nigeria's most prominent voices for African economic self-determination.

He founded and served as President and later Life Patron of the Africa Business Roundtable, using the platform to advocate tirelessly for continental economic integration, private-sector-led development, and a stronger African voice in global trade and investment. He held an honorary Doctorate of Law from Benue State University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.

Tributes Pour In
News of his passing drew an outpouring of condolences from across Nigeria's political spectrum. President Bola Tinubu described Tukur as "a towering figure whose distinguished career spanned public administration, governance, industry, politics and pan-African business leadership," calling him "urbane, generous and deeply rooted in the values of integrity and service that the Adamawa Emirate and the nation hold dear," and adding that he was "a man of big ideas and bold enterprise who believed in Nigeria's limitless potential."

Tinubu extended condolences to the Tukur family, the Fombina Emirate of Adamawa, and Nigeria's political and business communities on the continent.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri called him "a colossus who made remarkable contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria," whose "wealth of experience, wisdom and commitment to public service earned him a place of honour in our national history."

Fintiri declared three days of mourning across the state and ordered flags flown at half-mast.

Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Governors' Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, said on behalf of the forum that Nigeria had "lost one of its most experienced public servants, political leaders and champions of economic development," noting that Tukur's public service spanned "more than six decades" across critical national institutions.

A Family's Farewell
Announcing the death on behalf of the family, his son, Hon. Awwal D. Tukur, said: "It is with profound sadness and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah that the family announces the passing of our beloved father and patriarch, Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, who returned to his Creator today, 12th September 2026."

The family said he died after a life dedicated to service to his family, his community, Adamawa State, and Nigeria as a whole, and that they took solace in accepting his passing as the will of Allah.

In accordance with Islamic rites, his remains were being taken to Yola, Adamawa State, for burial.

A Legacy That Endures
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur's life traced the arc of Nigeria's post-independence story from the technocratic nation-building of the 1970s, through the turbulence and promise of the Second Republic, into the enduring party politics of the Fourth Republic while never losing sight of a broader, pan-African vision of what the continent's economies could achieve together. He leaves behind a legacy carried forward by his children, including Awwal Tukur and Lami Tukur, and by the institutions and political structures he helped shape across Adamawa State and the wider Nigerian federation.

Rest in peace, Alhaji Bamanga Mahmud Tukur statesman, builder, and a bridge between Nigeria's past and its future.
