Suicide remains a major public health challenge, claiming the lives of more than 720,000 people globally every year, with profound social, emotional and economic consequences for families, friends, workplaces and communities.
According to World Health Organisation release shared with Ghana News Agency, this year marks the third and final year of the triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2024–2026, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” with the call to action: “Start the Conversation.”
The theme calls on all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide.
It seeks to shift society from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy and support, creating environments where people feel able to speak up and seek help.
In Ghana, available data indicates a 3.8 per cent increase in suicidal cases between 2024 and 2025, raising concerns among health professionals and stakeholders.
It said changing the narrative also means driving systemic change and calling for suicide prevention and mental health to be prioritised in public policy.
This includes urging governments and institutions to develop and implement evidence-based strategies, improve access to quality care, and ensure that those in distress receive the support they need.
World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organization.
The Day is observed annually on September 10, focusing global attention on suicide prevention.
It unites communities, organisations and governments with the shared belief that suicides are preventable.
Mental health advocates have therefore called for increased awareness, early intervention, and strengthened support systems to address the trend.
They have also urged the public to show compassion, listen without judgment, and encourage persons in distress to seek professional help.
