Myths surrounding TST Reparations

There is a myth surrounding the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the demand of the African Union's demand for reparations. In March 2026, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly accepted the African Union resolution to call the Transatlantic Slave Trade the worst humanitarian atrocity in the history of mankind not WWII, Slavery during 1000 years Roman Empire, 3500 years of slavery during the Pharaohs reign, among others.

Governments are seated in the UN Assembly Hall, not their people. In any form of governance, there can be a disconnect between people in power and the people of a nation. While people in power come and go, people of a nation stay for much longer and have to bear the costs of a decision taken by their leaders, seemingly proclaimed on their behalf.

In none of the states that voted in favour, against or abstained from the AU motion were any referendum to hear the voices of the people of these nations were held nor a wider public discussions held to sensitise citizens around the world on the matter. Yet, African leaders see their victory in the UN as justice served to African slaves. Standing on the words of the UN resolution, they try to silence the bitter truth about the sellers of the slaves traded, of whom many died before reaching the shores of America. The Asantehene used his PoW during the Ashanti Empire as a source of income, negotiating with the white man the price for the captured black Africans (much more can be said and has already been written about).

Under the leadership of Ghana`s president John Dramani Mahama, the African Union will soon announce a figure (based on what?) to ask for reparations. The affected countries will decline their demand, which will anger the AU and, in their eyes, accelerate their anger and frustration against the white man. Any German, except African scholars, walking the streets of Germany does not know about this UN resolution, nor do critical journalists. They simply don't care. Other people in affected nations don't care either. After all, they were never asked in the first place to make up their mind.

What will be the outcome of this „exercise “? African leaders will be seen as personally greedy, wanting to take their „fair“ share from the funds surrendered, leaving justice for their people stranded on the shores of Africa, where once their ancestors had sailed to unknown territory.
