Government of Ghana Renews Partnership with Mercy Ships to Strengthen Surgical Care

The Government of Ghana and the international charity Mercy Ships have reaffirmed a long-standing partnership, confirming that the hospital ship Global Mercy will return to Ghanaian waters to deliver free specialised surgeries and expand training for local health workers.

A Presidential Endorsement
The renewed agreement followed a high-level meeting at the Presidency in Accra between President John Dramani Mahama and members of the Mercy Ships Board. Announcing the return of the vessel, President Mahama framed the partnership as central to the government's health agenda, stating that health is not a luxury but "the foundation of freedom" and "the currency of our dignity".

He described the collaboration as a strategic intervention that will complement ongoing government efforts to strengthen surgical care delivery nationwide.

Fifth Deployment Since 1991
The Global Mercy's field service in Ghana marks Mercy Ships' fifth deployment to the country since 1991, extending a three-decade relationship between the charity and successive Ghanaian governments. Previous visits have collectively delivered more than 2,600 life-changing surgeries, over 16,700 dental procedures, and professional development training for 139 Ghanaian healthcare workers.

Docked at the Port of Tema, the ship is expected to offer a broad range of specialised procedures, including tumour removal, cleft lip and palate repair, paediatric orthopaedic surgery, cataract surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, obstetric fistula repair, and general and paediatric surgeries.

Beyond the Operating Table
Mercy Ships' engagement with Ghana extends past direct surgical intervention. The organisation has been closely involved in supporting the development and implementation of Ghana's National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), working in coordination with the Ministry of Health and other national stakeholders.

Officials from Mercy Ships have said the organisation intends to keep identifying areas where its on-ship and off-ship programmes can reinforce Ghana's broader surgical ecosystem, rather than treating the ship's docking as a standalone event.

Voices from the Partnership
Gary Brown, Board Chair and Interim CEO of Mercy Ships, described the return to Ghana as an honour rooted in a shared history, adding that the organisation looks forward, alongside the Ministry of Health, to "delivering life-changing surgeries and investing in local surgical training" that strengthens the country's health system over the long term.

Update: Ship Arrives in Tema
Since the September 2025 announcement, the Global Mercy has completed the journey to Ghana. The vessel arrived at the Port of Tema following a prior field service in Sierra Leone and a scheduled maintenance period, marking the start of a ten-month field service delivering free surgical care in partnership with the Government of Ghana.

Context: Ghana's Surgical Care Gap
Ghana, like much of West Africa, continues to face a shortage of specialist surgical capacity relative to population need, particularly outside major urban centres. Partnerships of this kind are widely viewed by health policymakers as a bridge rather than a substitute for domestic capacity-building a distinction Mercy Ships itself has emphasised through its parallel investment in training local professionals and supporting national surgical planning frameworks.
