NDC School placement crisis exposes NDC’s failure to reset education as promised – Kofi Tonto

New Patriotic Party (NPP) spokesperson on Employment and Jobs, Kofi Tonto, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over what he describes as a failure to deliver on its promise to reset Ghana’s education sector.

His comments come amid growing concerns over the 2026 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), which has left thousands of students without automatic placement into senior high schools.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, September 10, Kofi Tonto said the government’s promise is not merely to improve on the previous administration’s performance but to fundamentally fix challenges within the education sector.

He argued that the current difficulties surrounding school placement are symptomatic of broader challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and teacher shortages.

“That promise said we are coming to reset that which was bad. So if somebody placed 90% and you are placing 87%, have you raised it? What we are watching is an embarrassment," he said.

Kofi Tonto further questioned whether the government could genuinely claim to have reset the education sector, arguing that the quality of education goes beyond academic performance.

“If a minister of education tells us that he needs 50,000 teachers to be able to be optimal, and he only got clearance for 7,000, what does that tell you? So this is just a minute aspect of the bigger problem, a failure of a government that promised and couldn't deliver every aspect of it," he stated.

He said the quality of school infrastructure, sporting facilities, landscaping and the number of contact hours available to students were all important factors in determining the quality of education.
