Assembly Member cautions Sokode-Ho drivers against unauthorized GH¢8 fare increase

The Assembly Member for the Sokode-Gbogame Electoral Area in the Ho Municipality, Hon. Mac-Billions Bansah Dickson, has cautioned commercial drivers plying the Sokode–Ho route against charging unapproved transport fares.

In a public notice dated 9th September, 2026, the Assembly Member said his attention had been drawn to reports that some drivers on the stretch were charging passengers GH¢8 instead of the approved GH¢6 fare.

He said the caution has become necessary following a joint press release issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on 8th September, 2026, which clearly stated that no decision had been taken to increase public transport fares.

According to him, the existing approved fares therefore remain in force and drivers and transport operators have been expressly urged to maintain the current fares until further notice, particularly as the Ministry of Transport has not directed or authorized any increment.

Hon. Bansah Dickson described the overcharging as unacceptable, noting that although the GH¢2 difference may appear small to the individual driver, when multiplied by several passengers and several trips daily, it becomes a significant and unjustified burden on ordinary commuters.

The Assembly member, further cautioned that the ongoing fuel intervention or discussions between Government and transport operators should not be interpreted by individual drivers as authorization to impose their own fares, stressing that the official GPRTU/GRTCC statement indicated that further engagement was ongoing and no adjustment had yet been approved.

He appealed to passengers to insist on the approved GH¢6 fare for the Sokode-Ho journey and to report persistent cases of unauthorized overcharging to the appropriate transport authorities for action.

While appreciating drivers for their service to the communities, the Assembly Member urged them to desist from the practice with immediate effect, not to resort to unauthorized charges that amount to siphoning money from already burdened passengers, and to respect the agreed process and await an official announcement from competent authorities.
