Kaduna Businessman Accuses Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of Taking His Moroccan Wife; Cleric Denies Claim, Threatens Defamation Suit

Kaduna Businessman Accuses Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of Taking His Moroccan Wife; Cleric Denies Claim, Threatens Defamation Suit

The Allegation
A Kaduna-based businessman, Nasir Musa Idris, has publicly accused prominent Nigerian Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of taking custody of his Moroccan wife, Khadija Diab, after he brought her to the cleric's residence for counselling. Idris made the allegation in an interview with RFI Hausa, the Hausa-language service of Radio France Internationale, saying he has been unable to reunite with his wife for roughly 11 months after leaving her at Gumi's residence in September 2025.

According to Idris, he married Khadija in October 2024 after travelling to Morocco to seek her hand, and says the marriage was completed with the requisite legal and immigration procedures, the consent of her parents, and the involvement of relevant authorities including the Nigerian embassy.

He told RFI Hausa he had trusted Gumi as a religious scholar and only brought his wife to him because the cleric asked to counsel her, given her youth. Idris alleges that after that meeting, his wife stopped responding to his calls, and that his subsequent efforts to get security agencies to investigate her disappearance were obstructed.

Idris has also alleged that Gumi was invited by relevant authorities to respond to questions on the matter but declined to honour that invitation . He has called on the cleric to answer the police invitation so an investigation can proceed, arguing that if Gumi is not at fault, nothing should stop him from clearing his name with the authorities.

No independent confirmation of the existence or status of any such police invitation was available in the reporting reviewed for this article .

A Documentation Dispute
Idris says the disagreement with Gumi originated over paperwork tied to his marriage. He claims the cleric pressed him to obtain a separate marriage certificate from a Sharia Court despite documentation already issued in connection with the Morocco and Nigeria proceedings, and alleges Gumi subsequently approached the Sharia Court in Malali to have such a certificate issued in his own name.

Idris says he presented supporting paperwork, including documents involving Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian embassy in Morocco, and a police character report .

The dispute has escalated into legal proceedings in Kaduna, where Idris has reportedly raised allegations bordering on wrongful restraint, interference in his marriage, theft and defamation, along with disputes over a purported marriage certificate.

Court filings connected to the case reportedly name Amal Ahmad Gumi, described as Sheikh Gumi's wife, along with members of the cleric's family, among the defendants; the filings indicate Idris initially introduced Khadija to Amal because both women were Moroccan.

Gumi'sGumi's Response
Sheikh Gumi has denied the allegations. Speaking to Weekend Trust, he said the Moroccan woman had already left Nigeria and was in Morocco with her parents, and indicated he intends to sue Idris for defamation. Gumi's personal assistant on special assignment, Malam Nasiru Ayuba also chairman of the Volunteers of Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna separately rejected the claim that Gumi kept the woman in his residence, saying she had approached the cleric herself seeking help with a personal problem.

Ayuba said Gumi's supporters should remain calm while the matter is resolved, describing the cleric as unfairly targeted on social media.

There is no independent confirmation that Gumi married Khadija, and the underlying allegations remain contested and have not been established as fact by any court.

What Remains Unverified
This account rests substantially on Idris's own statements to RFI Hausa and on Gumi's response through intermediaries and press interviews; this publication has not independently verified the underlying claims.

Key open questions include the current whereabouts and status of Khadija Diab, the authenticity and provenance of the competing marriage documentation, and whether any formal police or other authority invitation was in fact issued to Gumi and declined.

As with any serious personal allegation against a public figure, this report should be read as an account of competing claims rather than an established finding of fact, and it will be updated as the Kaduna legal proceedings develop.
