GPRTU, GRTCC suspend decision on proposed public transport fare increase

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended a decision on a proposed increase in public transport fares for 2026.

The two transport bodies said consultations with the Ministry of Transport had begun following a meeting with the sector Minister and his technical team in Accra on Tuesday, September 8.

They said although the unions presented a proposal for an upward review of fares, further discussions are required to assess the impact of government’s GHS2 per litre intervention on diesel prices.

“Both parties acknowledged the value of the fuel intervention and agreed that its full impact on operating costs, together with the proposal for fare increment, requires further engagement before any determination is made on fares,” the unions said in a joint statement dated September 8.

A team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC has consequently been formed to review the various cost inputs before a decision is taken.

The unions said the exercise is intended to ensure that any eventual fare adjustment would be fair and take into account the interests of both transport operators and passengers.

They stressed that no decision had been taken to adjust public transport fares and urged passengers not to pay any new fares.

“We wish to reassure the public that existing approved fares remain in force across the country,” the statement said.

The GPRTU and GRTCC therefore directed drivers, station masters and transport owners to maintain the current approved fares until further notice.

They also appealed to drivers, transport operators and the travelling public to remain calm, orderly and cooperative while the consultations continue.

The outcome of the review, the unions said, would be communicated to the public in due course.
