The police have arrested the mother of a suspected highway robbery gang leader for allegedly concealing a firearm believed to have been used in a robbery on the Nsawam stretch of the Accra-Kumasi N6 highway.
Four other suspects believed to be members of the gang have also been arrested, including a 14-year-old boy who allegedly served as a lookout and alerted the group to the movement of potential targets.
The robbery occurred on August 18, 2026.
The suspects include the alleged gang leader, identified by the police as Obotan; his biological mother, Isaka Nafse, who is accused of supplying weapons to the gang; Isaka Majid; and the 14-year-old boy.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday afternoon, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said Isaka Nafse was arrested after the police accused her of hiding a weapon used in the robbery at her residence.
He said a search of the suspect’s residence resulted in the recovery of several firearms, weapons and other items suspected to be connected to the robbery.
The items retrieved included a pump-action gun, a double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, two AA cartridges and a locally manufactured pistol.
The police also recovered three cutlasses, two pairs of handcuffs, two jackknives, a canister of pepper spray, a metal bar, an ammunition pouch and a tactical vest.
An unregistered Royal 125 motorbike was also found at the residence.
According to Mr Yohuno, all the suspects are currently in police custody and assisting investigators with the ongoing probe.
He added that the police were also pursuing another suspect identified as Tanko.
