Gov’t to establish diaspora consular fund for Ghanaians in distress abroad

The government is set to establish a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund to provide emergency support to citizens who encounter distress or crisis situations outside the country.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the proposed fund would provide the government with a dedicated emergency response mechanism to quickly mobilise resources for Ghanaians whose safety, security or welfare may be threatened abroad.

Mr Ablakwa announced this while addressing journalists on the government’s efforts to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.

He said the fund would enhance Ghana’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies involving its citizens in other countries and provide the necessary assistance during critical situations.

“I wish to announce that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will soon launch a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund, which will serve as an emergency response funding mechanism to swiftly take care of Ghanaians in distress and during crisis situations anywhere in the world.”

The Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians regardless of where they live, work or travel.

“I wish to take this opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the Government of Ghana to protect the lives and welfare of its citizens wherever they may be and will continue to take timely and decisive action wherever the safety and security of Ghanaians abroad are at risk.”

The proposed fund comes as the government continues to evacuate and provide support to Ghanaians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
