Putin Orders 72-Hour Pause On Kyiv Strikes As Witkoff, Kushner Revive Stalled Peace Push

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a 72-hour halt to strikes on Kyiv, timed to coincide with a visit by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as Washington attempts to breathe life back into a peace process that has been dormant for months.

A Pause Built Around a Visit
The Kremlin confirmed the move on Saturday, September 5, through presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who told Tass that Putin had ordered no strikes on Kyiv "for three days, starting at midnight".

Peskov tied the decision directly to preparations for the envoys' onward trip to Kyiv, which was expected the following day, and confirmed that Kushner and Witkoff would also meet Putin in Moscow, though he cautioned there was "no talk of new ideas" on the table .

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had pre-empted the announcement on Friday, saying Kyiv would halt its own airstrikes during the envoys' visit and calling on Moscow to reciprocate. The envoys were met at Moscow's airport by Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who posted photos of the delegation's arrival captioned "Welcome to Moscow Peacemakers".

A Diplomatic Track That Went Quiet
The visit marks the most significant re-engagement between Washington and Moscow on the war in months. Witkoff and Kushner, both real-estate developers whom President Trump has repeatedly deployed as personal envoys on sensitive files, last visited Moscow in January.

Their return trip to Kyiv is their first, and Trump told reporters ahead of their departure that "they're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," describing the pair as "great negotiators".

The renewed push comes after Washington's mediation effort, active through 2025 and into early 2026, effectively stalled once U.S. attention shifted toward its conflict with Iran following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in February that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Fighting Intensified Before the Pause
The pause arrives against a backdrop of escalation rather than calm. With the diplomatic track frozen, Russia had ramped up bombardments of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, exploiting gaps in Ukraine's air-defence coverage, while Ukraine's own long-range strikes continued to target Russian military sites, refineries and logistics hubs.

Just a day before the announced pause, a Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service in Kyiv, one of the agencies involved in Ukraine's deep-strike operations inside Russia, and Russian attacks elsewhere in the country killed several people.

Ukrainian officials have treated the gesture with visible skepticism. Andrii Yermak, head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, indicated that Kyiv had not committed to observing the full three-day window and suggested the timing was tied less to diplomacy than to securing an unrelated military parade in Moscow, dismissing the move as largely symbolic.

Yermak said that in parallel discussions involving U.S. and European advisers, Ukraine had pressed instead for a full 30-day ceasefire as a genuine first step, stating that "a complete and unconditional ceasefire must be the first step toward a just and lasting peace".

The war is now in its fifth year, and Saturday's pause, whatever its durability, represents the clearest sign yet that Washington intends to re-engage both capitals directly rather than let the process drift further.
