A Nigerian court has heard new details about the road crash involving British boxer Anthony Joshua, with prosecutors alleging that his driver was attempting to overtake a moving truck when the Lexus SUV carrying the boxer and his friends crashed into a stationary lorry.
The accident resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, while the boxer was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Lexus, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has pleaded not guilty to charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
The court heard that Joshua and the 2 deceased men were travelling to Ogun State to visit Joshua’s father when the crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Makun last December.
According to the court proceedings, the passengers were asleep when Kayode allegedly attempted to overtake a moving truck before the SUV collided with the stationary lorry.
Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that both vehicles had already been removed from the scene by the time he arrived.
He said debris from the collision, as well as soya beans that had spilled from the lorry’s load, were scattered across the road.
Police yet to take Joshua’s statement
The court was also told that police had not yet obtained a statement from Joshua, 8 months after the accident.
Under questioning from Kayode’s lawyer, Inspector Taiwo said he had not contacted the boxer because he did not have Joshua’s telephone number.
A second defendant, 35-year-old Abubakar Adamu, who was driving the stationary lorry, has also pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing the free flow of traffic.
The trial has been adjourned to September 10.
