AMA to enforce compliance as Accra undergoes post-Homowo clean-up on September 5

​The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned that residents, traders, and business owners who fail to participate in the upcoming post-Homowo clean-up exercise on Saturday, September 5, 2026, will face strict legal sanctions.

This will include arrest, fines, and prosecution before the Sanitation Court.

​According to a press release issued by the Assembly and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, on behalf of the Metro Chief Executive, the warning comes as the Assembly prepares to execute the September edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up.

The initiative is designed to restore environmental order, protect public health, and maintain the safety of major road corridors across the capital following the Homowo festival celebrations.

​The sanitation exercise, scheduled to run from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, will enforce a temporary ban on all commercial activities.

​The AMA directed that all shops, stalls, tabletop businesses, and trading operations remain closed throughout the six-hour duration to ensure total compliance and unhindered participation.

​Key areas designated for intensive cleanup include Graphic Road, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Avenor and Caprice to the Abeka Junction stretch on J.J. Rawlings Avenue, along with other high-density business and community zones needing immediate environmental intervention.

​Sanitation task teams and local enforcement officers will monitor compliance, while Assembly Members have been mandated to lead, coordinate, and mobilise communities within their respective electoral areas.

​To achieve thorough coverage, the Assembly has directed transport operators, food vendors, and residents to weed overgrown frontages, clear road curbs, desilt drains, and sweep public spaces.

​Corporate entities, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies, and youth groups are also called upon to support the national initiative by deploying personnel and resources to complement local efforts.

​The AMA reaffirmed that the Post-Homowo initiative forms part of a sustained government strategy to elevate public hygiene standards, safeguard urban infrastructure, and foster civic responsibility toward keeping the national capital clean.
