Defence Minister calls for deeper Ghana-Egypt military cooperation

The Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has called for strengthened defence cooperation between Ghana and Egypt, particularly in intelligence sharing, cybersecurity, border security and specialised military training.

He said deeper collaboration between the two countries would help strengthen the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and contribute to efforts to address emerging security threats, including violent extremism in West Africa.

The defence minister made the call on Thursday in Accra during an engagement with the Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Wael Fathy Ahmed, where the two sides discussed areas of mutual interest in defence and security.

The Minister commended Egypt for its continued support to the GAF through specialised training for military engineers, healthcare professionals and technical officers.

He noted that strengthening the capabilities of the 48 Engineer Regiment, particularly in disaster response and infrastructure protection, remained a national priority.

Mr Adjei also acknowledged Egypt’s extensive experience in border security, intelligence and cybersecurity, and proposed enhanced cooperation in these areas.

He said Ghana would welcome deeper intelligence-sharing arrangements, joint military exercises and specialised training programmes to enhance the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces and strengthen regional security.

Ambassador Wael Fathy Ahmed congratulated Mr Adjei on his appointment as Minister for Defence and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continued defence cooperation with Ghana.

The Ambassador assured the Minister that Egypt is ready to support the GAF in cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, training, and border security, and expressed his country’s willingness to share its expertise and experience in those areas.

H.E. Ahmed further proposed that Ghana and Egypt explore opportunities for joint ventures in defence manufacturing and technology transfer, saying such cooperation could further strengthen the capacity of both countries.

He also reiterated Egypt’s commitment to providing specialised training opportunities for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces.
