Afenyo-Markin, A-Plus to lead peace mission to Gomoa and Effutu communities on September 5

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, will on Saturday, September 5, visit communities in Gomoa and Effutu as part of efforts to restore peace following recent violent clashes linked to a longstanding land dispute.

The 2 lawmakers are expected to engage residents, listen to their concerns and work with traditional authorities to find a lasting solution to the tensions between the affected communities.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Mr Afenyo-Markin said leaders from both sides had committed themselves to peace and urged residents to remain calm and exercise restraint.

“We want to assure the public that the leaders of both communities have agreed to allow peace to prevail. We will visit both communities on Saturday to engage the people, address the issues and correct the wrongs,” he said.

A-Plus also expressed his support for the initiative, saying the 2 lawmakers had agreed on a strategy aimed at achieving sustainable peace in the affected areas.

“My brother has spoken and together, we have adopted a strategy to ensure lasting peace. I would like to express my appreciation to my brother for his commitment to this course,” he said.

The planned visit follows violent clashes in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, which resulted in 3 deaths and left 17 others injured.

The clashes reportedly involved groups from New Winneba, Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.

The police have since arrested 7 people in connection with the violence as investigations continue.
