September Sanitation Day to focus on post-Homowo clean-up in Accra – AMA

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the September edition of the National Sanitation Day will focus on a post-Homowo clean-up exercise across the metropolis.

The exercise is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with traders, businesses, transport operators, residents and other stakeholders expected to participate.

The Assembly has directed all shops, stalls, tabletop businesses and other trading activities to remain closed during the exercise to allow for effective cleaning of the city.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, the AMA said the exercise would involve the cleansing and weeding of road medians, clearing of curbs, removal of refuse and sweeping of public spaces.

“Activities for the day, which form part of the Post-Homowo clean-up effort, will centre on the extensive cleansing and weeding of road medians, clearing of curbs, removal of refuse, sweeping of public spaces and general cleaning of major roads, markets, lorry parks, communities and business districts," the statement read in part.

The exercise will particularly cover Graphic Road and the section of the J.J. Rawlings Avenue stretching from Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Avenor and Caprice to Abeka Junction.

Other strategic areas within the metropolis that require urgent sanitation attention will also be covered.

The AMA said the exercise forms part of government’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health, enhance the city’s appearance and promote collective responsibility for keeping Accra clean.

It urged corporate institutions, NGOs, religious bodies, youth groups, community-based organisations and other stakeholders to support the exercise through personnel and community mobilisation.

Assembly Members are also expected to lead clean-up activities in their respective electoral areas to ensure effective coordination and participation at the local level.
