Ghanaians must reject selfishness, greed to eliminate corruption – Methodist Presiding Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has called on Ghanaians to take a stronger stand against corruption and uphold higher moral standards in society.

He said the persistence of corrupt practices is inconsistent with Ghana’s reputation as a deeply religious country, particularly given the significant Christian population.

Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu said corruption had become entrenched across various social institutions and was undermining the country’s development efforts.

The Presiding Bishop made the remarks in a video seen by ModernGhana News on Thursday, September 3, as part of the Pledge Against Corruption campaign.

“For a country that prides itself in its high religious activities, with a Christian percentage of more than 70 percent, ordinarily this should be a country that upholds high moral standards in every aspect of our life, and yet we know that wherever we turn, our social institutions are bedeviled with corrupt behavior,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to change their attitude towards corruption and collectively work towards building a society anchored on integrity and responsible citizenship.

Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu referenced the work of legendary Ghanaian ethnomusicologist Ephraim Amu, noting that selfishness and greed had contributed to the country’s development challenges.

“Selfishness and greed have disabled our efforts at development, and that is what I mean by corruption. Let's stand against it, and I'm sure with the help of God, this country will do better than we are doing now,” he said.

He subsequently declared his personal commitment to the fight against corruption, saying he stood against the practice in all its forms.
