The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Hon. Sammi Awuku, has strongly condemned the violent incident involving Okuapeman Senior High School and Mt. Sinai Senior High School, describing the development as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
Hon. Awuku made the remarks in a statement shared on his official Facebook page after visiting both schools in the Akuapem North Municipality following the unfortunate incidents.
The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, resulted in a fire outbreak, destruction of school property and disruption of academic activities, raising concerns about the safety and wellbeing of students.
According to the Akuapem North MP, the incident is believed to be linked to a supposed long-standing rivalry between the two schools.
He warned that such rivalry must not be allowed to degenerate into violence, stressing that students cannot take the law into their own hands or allow disagreements to bring education to a standstill.
Hon. Awuku has therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations to identify those responsible and ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
He also urged the management of both Okuapeman SHS and Mt. Sinai SHS to cooperate with relevant stakeholders to address the root causes of the rivalry and find a lasting solution to prevent similar incidents.
The MP further appealed to parents to remain calm, assuring them that the students are being cared for and that their safety remains a priority.
He urged parents and guardians to play their part by guiding their children, teaching them responsibility and reinforcing the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully.
Hon. Awuku stressed that protecting students, schools and the future of young people is a collective responsibility.
“Let us protect our children, protect our schools and protect their future,” he stated.
