Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agboza, has cautioned contractors working on government road projects against failing to work when there is no official inspection.
He said the ministry would no longer tolerate a situation where contractors only become active when they are informed about visits by government officials.
The minister, who also serves as the MP for Adaklu, issued the caution after making a surprise visit to the Sunyani Outer Ring Road project on Wednesday, September 2, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the level of work.
“I know some people working with me share the itinerary with the contractors, and then they prepare to receive me. I call it eye service. When I go to the site on my own and I do a lot without your knowledge, I don't see them working," the Minister said.
The minister said his independent monitoring teams had recently visited projects in the Eastern, Bono Ahafo and Ashanti regions and had returned with reports that did not reflect the positive updates he sometimes receives from regional officials.
He said government is spending significant amounts of money on the projects and had set deadlines that contractors were expected to meet.
According to him, contractors cannot continue to cite payment challenges as an excuse for failing to work, particularly when they are unable to identify specific projects where delayed payments have prevented them from operating.
The Minister also expressed concern about the performance of some regional directors and engineers within the ministry’s agencies.
The minister directed the Urban Roads Regional Director, Highways Regional Director, Highways Chief Executive and Urban Roads Director to report to his office on Monday to explain the situation observed at the project site.
Agboza said the government would not allow business as usual on road projects at a time when many Ghanaians were expecting improved infrastructure and value for public funds.
