How 300 mob from Gomoa stormed New Winneba, attacked residents and damaged properties

A mob of about 300 people has reportedly stormed the New Winneba Township in the Effutu North District of the Central Region, attacking residents and damaging properties.

The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when the group, reportedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, moved into the township from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.

According to a situation report from the Winneba Divisional Police Command to ModernGhana News, the irate group attacked residents and caused damage to the Effutu North District Police Headquarters, as well as shops, stores and residences belonging to natives.

The violence left several people injured, with about 12 victims subsequently transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

A police officer, Chief Inspector Daniel Quartey, was among those injured during the incident.

The Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and patrol teams from the Agona Swedru District have been deployed to the affected areas to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The police are maintaining a presence in the area as efforts continue to bring the situation under control.

Further details on the cause of the confrontation and the extent of the damage were not immediately available.
