Don’t pay unapproved transport fares - Tarkwa Nsuaem Assembly tells passengers

Residents in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region have been directed by the assembly not to pay any unapproved fares demanded by drivers or transport operators.

The assembly said they should continue to pay the existing approved fares until officials announced new fares.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mrs. Babbie Annan-Nunoo, Director in charge of communication for the Municipal Chief Executive and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

It said checks made at the Transport Ministry and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) indicated that no negotiations had been concluded between them regarding any increment in transportation fares.

The statement advised passengers to report any driver who charged fares above the official rates to the Ghana Police Service or the appropriate regulatory authorities for the necessary action to be taken.

It added that the assembly was currently engaging relevant stakeholders and remained on standby for any official directive from the Ministry of Transport.

The statement further said should there be any approved adjustments to transportation fares, the assembly would communicate same to the public through the appropriate channels.

Also, the statement urged the public to disregard any unauthorized information or alleged agreement concerning the issue until such decision had been formally negotiated, approved, and officially communicated by authorities.

It added that the assembly was not part of any meeting, arrangement, or decision that had resulted in increased transport fares within the municipality.
