'You are person of integrity and honesty; I honestly enjoyed working with you' – Mahama Ayariga tells Afenyo-Markin

Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has praised Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his integrity and honesty, despite the political differences that have characterised their roles in Parliament.

Mr Ayariga made the remarks when Mr Afenyo-Markin asked him to describe his personality during his vetting before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Mr Ayariga, who previously served as Majority Leader before his nomination as Minister-designate, said the one-and-a-half years he worked with Mr Afenyo-Markin gave him the opportunity to develop a relationship beyond their political positions.

He described the Minority Leader as a man of integrity and honesty and expressed appreciation for the openness and forthrightness with which he dealt with him during their time working together.

“I've come to know you as a person of integrity and honesty. And I want to thank you for the forthrightness with which you have dealt with me as the Majority Leader,” Mr Ayariga said.

He said their opposing political positions did not prevent them from maintaining a cordial relationship and developing a genuine friendship.

“I honestly, honestly enjoy your friendship. I enjoyed your friendship, and I do appreciate that,” he said.

Mr Ayariga also commended Mr Afenyo-Markin for his resilience and determination in defending the interests of the Minority Caucus.

“You never give up. Even when you are lying down, you'll be shouting, 'When I get up, you will see me,'” he remarked.

He expressed the hope that his successor as Majority Leader would establish a similarly constructive relationship with Mr Afenyo-Markin.

“I hope that you and my successor will find common ground the same way,” he said.
