Pamprom–first Light Road To Close From September 7 For Major Drainage Works

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project has announced the temporary closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr Busia Highway from Pamprom Junction, beginning September 7, 2026, to allow major drainage improvement works to be undertaken.

The first phase of the closure is expected to continue until the end of November 2026, with construction around Pamprom Junction scheduled for completion in time for the junction to reopen in the first week of December.

The project involves the construction of a 1.5-kilometre double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain extending from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction within the Kaneshie area.

The new drain will be approximately 10 metres wide and is expected to replace the existing twin 1.2-metre-diameter pipe system currently serving the area.

It will also link the recently completed drainage section at the Accra Academy campus to the existing drain at Pamprom Junction, improving the capacity of the stormwater drainage network in the area.

Coordinator of the GARID Project and member of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, Kojo Ohene Safo, announced the planned traffic restrictions during the Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 26.

He explained that the scale of the construction required temporary road closures but said a comprehensive traffic management plan had been developed in collaboration with the Department of Urban Roads to reduce disruption to motorists.

“The first phase will begin on 7th September 2026 with the closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr Busia Highway starting from Pamprom Junction. This phase will continue till the end of November 2026,” he said.

Alternative routes

The first phase of the closure will affect motorists travelling from Korle Bu, Graphic Road, Obetsebi Lamptey Circle, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and adjoining routes towards First Light Junction.

Affected motorists will be diverted through Awudome Cemetery Road, New Times Road, Awudome Roundabout, Oblogo and Mataheko before reconnecting at First Light Junction.

Motorists may also use the Obetsebi Interchange–Oblogo Traffic Light–Mataheko corridor as an alternative.

GARID said directional and advance warning signs would be installed along the affected routes to guide road users.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and relevant metropolitan and municipal assemblies will also support traffic management during the construction period.

Further closures

Although Pamprom Junction is expected to reopen in December 2026, the remaining westbound section between Kaneshie Station and First Light Junction will remain closed until August 2027 to facilitate the continuation of underground drainage construction.

A third phase is expected to commence in September 2027 as construction reaches First Light Junction. That phase will involve the temporary closure of the road linking First Light Junction to the Cocoa Clinic Roundabout until the end of October 2027.

The government is expected to provide advance notice of subsequent traffic arrangements as the project progresses.

GARID has urged residents, commuters, transport operators, businesses and the general public to plan their journeys ahead of the closures and avoid the construction areas where possible.

Road users have also been encouraged to use the designated diversion routes unless they have legitimate business within the affected areas.
