“Your bail conditions will be scary” – Afenyo Markin warns GoldBod officials

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin has warned that Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi could face “scary” bail conditions in the future if the standards currently being applied to some former government officials become the norm.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Effutu MP said the bail conditions imposed on individuals under investigation could establish a precedent with implications for officials of the current administration if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power.

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the approach adopted by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could eventually affect officials currently holding public positions, particularly those managing GoldBod.

He linked his warning to what he described as losses of about GH¢22 billion associated with the government's domestic gold purchasing programme, although the figure and its interpretation remain subjects of political debate.

The Minority Leader urged government officials to consider the potential consequences of the standards being applied to persons currently facing investigations.

He maintained that investigations and bail conditions must be guided by established legal principles and due process rather than political considerations.

Mr Afenyo-Markin cautioned that political power changes hands and that the treatment of individuals under the current administration could set standards that future governments may apply to officials who serve today.
