CRS, WAN construct borehole for Depali T. I Ahmadiyya Basic School

A borehole has been constructed for Depali T. I Ahmadiyya Basic School in the Savelugu Municipality to improve learners’ access to safe and reliable water for their hygiene needs.

The facility, located on the school’s premises, will also serve the water needs of members of the Depali community.

It was constructed by Catholic Relief Services (CRS), an international NGO, with funding support from Water Access Now (WAN).

Dr Abena Amedormey, Country Representative, CRS, speaking during the inauguration of the facility, said, “It represents more than a source of water. It is an investment in education, health and the future of every child, who learns in this school.”

Dr Amedormey added that “Today, we celebrate not only the completion of a borehole but also the realization of hope, dignity, health and opportunity for the pupils, teachers and community members, who will benefit from this facility.”

She said the construction of the facility formed part of the partners’ effort to improve access to safe and reliable water for vulnerable communities in the country.

She said since 2006, CRS and WAN had worked together to improve access to safe and sustainable water for underserved communities in the Northern, Oti and parts of the Bono Regions.

Dr Amedormey said, “Through WAN's generous support, more than USD 3 million has been invested in water access initiatives resulting in the construction of over 300 water facilities.”

She said, “These facilities have improved the lives of thousands of people by reducing the burden of water collection, preventing waterborne diseases, supporting livelihoods and creating healthier learning environments for children.”

She expressed appreciation to WAN for its continued confidence in CRS and its commitment to the country.

She also acknowledged the support of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, school management, teachers, parents and community members helping to deliver the project.

She told the learners that “This facility belongs to you. Use it responsibly, practise good hygiene and help protect it for future generations of students.”

Dr Amedormey assured that “As CRS continues to implement the Improving Water Access in Northern Ghana project, we remain committed to working with partners to expand access to safe water and strengthen the resilience of communities.”

Madam Nicole Miller, Board Member of WAN expressed gratitude to all the community partners for their support for the project.

She was happy that the community had gained access to safe and reliable water, expressing hope that the facility would serve current and future generations.

Mr Abdulai Firdause, Headmaster, Depali T. I Ahmadiyya Basic School, thanked CRS and WAN for addressing a major need of the school, which would go a long way to improve teaching and learning amongst learners.
