Atebubumanhene brokers peace in longstanding Wiase chieftaincy dispute

A chieftaincy dispute in the Wiase Traditional Area, which began on September 14, 2017, has finally been resolved through the mediation efforts of His Royal Majesty Ohempon Dr. Yeboah Asiamah, Paramount Chief of the Atebubu Traditional Area.

The dispute, involving members of the Saaman royal gates over succession to the Wiase Stool, was the subject of proceedings before the Judicial Committee of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs.

Over the years, the disagreement created deep divisions within the community and threatened the unity of the Wiase Traditional Area.

In late 2025, recognising the historical and filial relationship between Atebubu and Wiase, the disputing parties agreed to allow the Atebubumanhene to broker peace through customary mediation.

The Judicial Committee of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs subsequently granted approval for the mediation process.

Through a series of consultations in which the elders and family heads of the Saaman royal families commendably participated in frank discussions aimed at restoring unity, the disputing parties agreed to a customary settlement, reaffirmed their commitment to the traditions of the Wiase Stool, and jointly pledged to maintain peace and harmony within the traditional area.

The settlement has since been formally communicated to the Judicial Committee of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, together with a motion by the parties requesting that the case be struck out from the records of the House.

Thankfully, the settlement was accepted by the Judicial Committee on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with special thanks to the President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Owusu Sakyi III, for allowing the case to be settled through customary proceedings.

Observers within traditional leadership circles have described the resolution as a remarkable example of the power of customary diplomacy and reconciliation within Ghana’s chieftaincy system.

Many have praised Ohempon Dr. Yeboah Asiamah for his patience, calm leadership, and commitment to preserving unity among traditional authorities.

The peaceful resolution of the dispute is expected to restore stability within the Wiase Traditional Area and allow the community to refocus on development and collective progress.

For many in the Bono East Region, the outcome stands as a powerful reminder that disputes can be avoided and, where already present, resolved through transparent, customary, multiparty dialogue aimed at securing the common good.
