Nigerian Troops Ambush Lakurawa Terrorists in Kebbi, Recover Communication Gear and Foreign ID Card

Nigerian troops have repelled an attempted incursion by fighters of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG) in Kebbi State, forcing the militants to abandon their mission and retreat after a tactical ambush near the Niger Republic border.
The Ambush
Troops of Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigerian Army's counter-terrorism and anti-banditry deployment covering the northwest, intercepted the terrorists at a crossing point near Uguwan Hassan village as the fighters moved to strike Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State. According to the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olayinka Osoba, the operation was launched on credible intelligence about the group's movement, allowing troops to mobilise swiftly and lay the ambush before the terrorists reached their target.

Osoba said the ensuing firefight ended in the militants' favor turning against them: overwhelmed by superior firepower, the Lakurawa fighters broke off their advance and retreated in disarray.

Items Recovered
In the aftermath, troops recovered a cache of equipment the group had been relying on for logistics and communication, including two motorcycles, mobile phones, and T&T-brand radio transceivers. Also recovered was a Nigerien national identity card said to belong to one of the fleeing terrorists, whose documents traced him to the Tibiri region of Niger Republic a detail that fits a broader pattern of Sahelian militant groups drawing fighters and logistics networks across Niger's porous southern border into Nigeria's northwest.

Ongoing Operations
Osoba said troops are now dominating the general area with aggressive patrols and remain in active pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, describing the effort as part of a sustained push to secure the local population. The military characterized the Kebbi ambush as the latest in a string of counter-terrorism gains as it intensifies operations against armed groups across Nigeria's northwest.

Context
Lakurawa is a relatively young but fast-growing armed group operating along the Nigeria-Niger-Benin border axis, distinct from though at times overlapping in territory with the banditry networks long plaguing Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto states. Its cross-border character, reliance on motorcycles for mobility, and use of handheld radios for coordination mirror tactics documented among JNIM- and ISWAP-linked cells further north and east in the Sahel, underscoring how thinly stretched Nigerian and Nigerien security forces remain across a border region that continues to function as a corridor for militant movement, arms, and recruitment.
