Government receives relief items from UAE to support flood victims in Ghana

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has donated relief items to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support persons affected by the recent floods in parts of the country.

The items which valued at US$ 1 million, included mattresses, bed sheets, drinking water and other essential supplies, and were presented by a UAE delegation led by H.E. Rashid Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Operations at UAE Aid.

The items were received on behalf of the Government by the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr Terlabi expressed the Government’s appreciation to the UAE for the timely humanitarian gesture, saying the support would help ease the difficulties faced by communities affected by the floods.

He said disasters were often unforeseen and placed enormous pressure not only on affected persons but also on the Government, particularly in providing immediate relief and support to victims.

The Deputy Minister expressed confidence that the relief items would go a long way to provide some comfort and relief to persons who had been affected by the floods.

Mr Terlabi assured that the items would be distributed fairly to ensure that they reached persons and communities most in need.

He said the Government remained committed to supporting affected communities and working with partners to respond effectively to the humanitarian needs arising from disasters.

The UAE delegation, led by the Executive Director for Operations of UAE AID, H.E. Rashid Al Shamsi, said the UAE regarded Ghana as a home and was therefore committed to standing with the country during difficult times.

“We believe in shared responsibility, and at this time, we want to share that responsibility by supporting the Government of Ghana,” he said.
