Nollywood's Newest Battalion: Ex-Actress Reveals How Cameroonian Church Friends Led Her Into the US Arm

A growing wave of Nigerian entertainers trading the Nollywood spotlight for US military fatigues has produced its latest, and most candid, testimony a former actress crediting Cameroonian friends she met in church with steering her toward enlistment.

From Miss UNIBEN to US soldier
Before relocating to the United States, the entrepreneur and media professional built a career spanning modeling, pageantry and film. She founded and managed Voice Initiative, an NGO, as well as Beacon Media, handling talents, models, advertising and events, and pursued acting after attending the New York Film Academy in 2010. Her earlier career included winning the Miss UNIBEN and Face of UNIBEN pageants, and fronting campaigns for brands including Central Bank, Mouka Foam, Unilever, Guinness Malt and Coca-Cola.

Cameroonian encouragement, unexpected direction

In her interview with The Nation, she described how the idea of military service came not from fellow Nigerians but from Cameroonian friends she met through church. They admired her strength and resilience, encouraged her, answered her questions and guided her through the process support she says was indispensable to turning the ambition into reality. She now describes a longing to see more Nigerians follow her into the ranks, drawn to the comfort of shared Pidgin English, familiar meals and childhood memories with fellow West Africans far from home.

Part of a wider Nollywood exodus
Her story is the latest entry in what Nigerian media has dubbed a brain-drain trend reshaping the industry. Vanguard reports the movement has become more noticeable since 2024, reflecting a career shift driven by personal fulfilment, patriotism, financial security and the opportunities available through military service. Recent additions to the list include actor Joseph Momodu, who completed his U.S. Army Basic Combat Training in April 2026, becoming the first known male Hollywood actor to publicly announce his enlistment, inspired by his late father's service in the Nigeria Police Force.

Others preceded her: former beauty queen Princess Chineke and actress-producer Mayowa Dosu both announced their enlistments on Instagram, while Grace Charis Bassey formerly known as Belinda Effah became one of the most talked-about celebrities to switch careers after graduating from United States Navy boot camp in 2025, with her enlistment also earning her U.S. citizenship.

A sensitive geopolitical question
Notably, she was also asked to reflect on a delicate hypothetical her position should tensions ever escalate between her adopted country and her homeland. Her candid acknowledgment that she would find herself in a difficult position if war broke out between Nigeria and America underscores the complicated dual loyalties now facing a growing cohort of Nigerian-born US service members.
