Anyone who causes mayhem at 'Democracy Under Attack' demo will be arrested — NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned that anyone who attempts to disrupt its planned "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration on Thursday, August 6, will be arrested and prosecuted.

The NPP has announced the nationwide protest in collaboration with other political parties and civil society organisations, citing concerns over what it describes as threats to Ghana's democracy and the rule of law.

The party says the demonstration follows the Court of Appeal's acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, a decision it argues raises concerns about justice and accountability in the country.

The NPP has also accused the government of selective justice, claiming some of its members have been arrested over comments they made while similar statements by members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have not attracted the same response.

Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, August 5, National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the party had received intelligence about possible attempts by some individuals to disrupt the protest.

"We are being told that some people will be sponsored to come and cause problems, to foment trouble, to cause mayhem. You will be arrested, and you will face the law," he said.

Nana B said the party has engaged the Ghana Police Service ahead of the demonstration and expressed confidence in its ability to provide security and maintain order throughout the exercise.

He added that the protection of democracy is a constitutional responsibility shared by all citizens and urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully.

"We remain confident in the professionalism, neutrality, and the constitutional mandate of the police to provide adequate security," he stated.

The NPP oeganiser called on all persons joining the demonstration to respect the Public Order Act and avoid any actions that could undermine the peaceful nature of the protest.
