'Democracy will continue to attack you until you apologise to Ghanaians for your most egregious sins' – Franklin Cudjoe tells NPP

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, arguing that the party cannot credibly champion the defence of democracy without first reflecting on its own record while in government.

In a post on social media, Mr Cudjoe questioned the basis of the protest and challenged the party's chosen theme.

“What is the theme of the NPP’s planned protest again? ‘Democracy under attack’?” he wrote.

He accused the NPP of remaining silent during the implementation of policies that, in his view, caused hardship for many Ghanaians, insisting that the party should first acknowledge its past actions.

“You committed the most egregious sin against democracy, and you haven’t even apologized. Democracy will continue to attack you until you apologise!” he stated.

Mr Cudjoe also took aim at the NPP’s economic management during its time in office, claiming that government policies eroded the savings and investments of millions of Ghanaians.

“We have not even added the highway pickpocketing of savings and investments of millions just to save what was left of a junk-rated economy,” he wrote.

The IMANI Africa President further lamented that extensive media coverage of the planned demonstration would disrupt a national discussion on plastic waste that he had scheduled for August 6.

“Now I am forced to reschedule a more important national conversation on plastic waste to be aired on live TV and radio on August 6 because media plans to cover the unnecessary demo,” he said.

He also expressed concern about the environmental impact of the protest, suggesting it would leave litter on the streets.

“The unnecessary demo… would leave behind piles of rubbish, including plastics on our streets, irresponsibly,” he added.

The NPP is expected to stage its nationwide “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday, August 6.

According to the organisers, the protest is intended to draw attention to what they describe as political persecution, selective justice and other threats to democratic governance under the current administration.

The march is scheduled to begin at the Supreme Court, proceed past the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and Jubilee House, before ending at Parliament.
