Speaking at the Volta Regional edition of the JoyNews "Democracy Is Not For Sale" forum held in Ho on Friday, July 31, 2026, ACP Mrs Brown Mercy Wilson, Head of Legal and Prosecution for the Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region, urged citizens who face threats or intimidation during electoral processes to report directly to the police rather than relying on intermediaries. She emphasized that under Ghanaian law, the punishment for threatening somebody is 10 to 25 years imprisonment, a penalty she said should deter anyone considering coercion as a tool to influence the electoral process.

Vote Buying Described as a "Crime Scene"
ACP Wilson's remarks formed part of a broader caution to politicians against distributing food and other items during elections, practices she said amount to potential vote buying that could compromise free and fair decision-making by voters. According to a MyJoyOnline report on the forum, she described an environment in which a politician is seen sharing packages of food during an election as effectively a crime scene, and called on politicians and public figures to be conscious of conduct that could unduly influence the electorate through material inducements.
