Mobile money transactions in Ghana surged to a record 954 million, valued at GH¢492.9 billion, in June 2026, highlighting the continued dominance of digital payments over traditional banking channels, according to the latest data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
Figures contained in the central bank's Summary of Economic and Financial Data show that mobile money transactions significantly outpaced cheque payments during the month. While mobile money recorded 954 million transactions, cheque usage stood at just 406,000 transactions, with a total value of GH¢35.7 billion.
The report also revealed strong year-on-year growth in the value of mobile money transactions, rising from GH¢323.2 billion in June 2025 to GH¢492.9 billion in June 2026.
The number of registered mobile money accounts also increased during the period, climbing from 76.4 million to 84.6 million. Of these, 26.4 million accounts were active as of June 2026.
The total balance held in mobile money wallets, commonly referred to as the float, reached a record GH¢40 billion, up from GH¢28.9 billion recorded in June 2025.
The BoG data further showed that the number of registered mobile money agents reached one million, with 546,000 actively providing services across the country.
Meanwhile, Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), which allows users to transfer funds seamlessly across different mobile networks, recorded 33.5 million transactions valued at GH¢6.2 billion during the month.
The latest figures underscore the growing reliance on mobile money as Ghana's preferred payment platform, driven by increased digital adoption, wider agent networks and expanding financial inclusion.
