Ghana partners Egypt ahead of 70years of diplomatic relations

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Interior, has confirmed its commitment to strengthening the defence, security and economic cooperation with the Arab Republic of Egypt as the two countries prepare to commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.

Speaking on behalf of the Government at Egypt's 74th National Day celebration in Accra, Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, said Ghana values its longstanding relationship with Egypt, which is founded on shared Pan-African ideals, mutual respect, and a common commitment to peace, stability, and development across the continent.

He paid tribute to Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and Egypt's former President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, whose visionary leadership and dedication to African liberation laid the foundation for the enduring partnership between the two countries.

The Deputy Minister noted that the 1952 Egyptian Revolution inspired many African nations in their struggle for independence and self-governance, adding that Ghana continues to acknowledge Egypt's significant contribution to Africa's liberation and development.

He appreciated Egyptian investments in Ghana, noting that Egyptian companies' operations continue to contribute to industrial growth, job creation, technology transfer and economic transformation.

He commended the capacity-building programmes offered to Ghanaian officials through the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development, describing them as an important avenue for strengthening institutional cooperation.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that Ghana remains committed to expanding bilateral engagement, particularly through enhanced private-sector partnerships and strategic cooperation in areas that promote national development and regional stability.

On multilateral affairs, Mr Terlabi praised Egypt's leadership within the African Union and the United Nations and Ghana's appreciation for Egypt's support for the recent United Nations General Assembly Resolution recognising the trafficking of enslaved Africans as "the Gravest Crime against Humanity."

He also acknowledged Egypt's participation in the High-Level Consultative Conference on the resolution held in Accra in June 2026, describing it as a demonstration of the shared commitment of both countries to justice, historical reconciliation and the preservation of Africa's cultural heritage.

The Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Wael Fathy, reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ghana and expressed confidence that the longstanding friendship between the two countries would continue to grow through increased collaboration in economic development, security and other areas of mutual interest.
